Frequently Asked Questions
A few things you might be wondering
Choosing someone to help with your home is personal. Here’s a little more about how I work and what you can expect when we work together.
-
What can you help me with?
I help you work out how you want your home to feel, then develop the decorating decisions that will get it there. That might mean finding the right paint color or rethinking a room that has never quite worked. It might mean choosing furnishings and wallpaper across the house, with a plan for how everything sits together.
Color is a big part of my work, but I’m looking at the whole room: how you use it, what belongs in it and how the different elements relate to one another.
What’s the difference between House Call, On Call and Full House?
House Call is a consultation. We work through your questions during our meeting, and I send detailed notes afterwards so you can take things forward yourself.
On Call is for a room or defined project that needs more time. I research and source between meetings, developing recommendations for us to work through together.
Full House takes that same approach across your home. We work through the rooms in stages, considering how they connect as well as what each one needs.
The main distinction is how much design work happens beyond our conversations, and how much of your home we’re working on.
How involved do I need to be?
You don’t need to arrive with the answers or spend your evenings hunting for furniture. With On Call and Full House, developing the ideas and finding suitable options is my job. Yours is to tell me how you live, give honest feedback and make decisions from the recommendations I bring you.
You’ll also handle purchases and organise the people needed to carry out the work. We can work closely together on the design without me taking over the running of the project.
Can I hand the whole project over to you?
You can ask me to take the creative lead through On Call or Full House. I’ll develop the direction and help you resolve the choices, rather than expect you to design the room yourself.
My services don’t include managing orders or overseeing contractors. If you want someone to handle the project from the first ideas through deliveries and installation, a studio offering that complete service will be a better fit.
Do I need to know what I want before we start?
You don’t need a finished vision. Knowing what you’re drawn to, or what you’re tired of looking at, gives us somewhere to begin. If you have saved images, I’d love to see them, but there’s no requirement to arrive with a beautifully organised Pinterest board.
I’ll help you work out what belongs in your home and turn that into a direction we can build on.
Do I have to love bright color?
No. Working with color doesn’t mean using as much of it as possible. It means paying attention to how colors work together and how they feel in your particular space. We’ll find an approach you’re comfortable living with.
Can we keep furniture and things I already own?
Absolutely. I want to know what you love and what needs to stay. A room can change quite considerably without replacing everything in it, and the things you’ve collected often give us the most interesting place to start.
I’m equally happy working with an empty room that needs furnishing from scratch.

What will I receive?
For Full House, I develop room boards and source furnishings and materials, with purchasing links and a detailed paint and wallpaper plan. We work through the recommendations together, with guidance during our agreed project period.
For On Call, the deliverables are tailored to the room or project. They might include visual recommendations and sourcing links, or a scheme for the materials you need to choose.
Your proposal will set out what I’m developing for you and what you’ll receive, so you know what’s included before we begin.
How do we make decisions together?
I’ll bring you options selected with your home and our agreed direction in mind. We’ll talk through what works for you and what doesn’t, then refine the choices.
You’re allowed to dislike something I suggest. Useful feedback helps me understand what’s missing. You don’t have to come up with the replacement yourself.
Can we work in stages?
Yes. Full House is designed to let us consider the home as a whole while working through the rooms in stages, starting with your priorities.
You don’t have to buy everything at once. We’ll distinguish between the period when I’m actively developing the design with you and the time you take to put it into place.
How long will we work together?
That depends on the scope of your project. We’ll agree the project period in your proposal, including the support that sits within it.
It isn’t an open-ended arrangement, but if you need further help or want to add another space, we can discuss an extension and its fee before taking on that work.
Are furniture and materials included in the design fee?
No. The fee covers my design work and the support agreed in your proposal. Purchases and the cost of carrying out the work are separate.
We’ll talk about what you’re comfortable spending on the project so I can take that into account when developing recommendations.
Who places orders and arranges installation?
You purchase directly from the recommended suppliers and arrange deliveries or installations. You also hire and pay any tradespeople needed for the work.
My role is to develop the design and provide the guidance included in our agreement. Day-to-day scheduling and managing the work remain with you.
Do you work on renovations?
I can help with the appearance of a space and the materials you’re choosing as part of a renovation. I don’t take on the technical design or management of a project from the studs up.
If your project includes building work, tell me about it at the beginning. We’ll establish where I can help and where you’ll need someone with the relevant technical expertise.
Can you help with built-in shelving or other custom pieces?
Yes, I can help develop the visual direction and think through how the piece should work for you. Custom work also needs someone who can develop and verify the technical details before it’s made.
Any sketches or visual references I provide are to communicate the design intent. They aren’t fabrication instructions. We’ll need to establish who is taking responsibility for the technical development and site measurements, and agree any involvement from me with the maker before proceeding.
Do you provide technical drawings or construction plans?
I don’t provide construction-ready drawings or fabrication plans. The visual material included in your project will be described in your proposal.
I do check the dimensions of furniture I recommend against the room. For built-in or made-to-measure work, the appointed maker needs to carry out their own site measurements and confirm the technical requirements before production.

What happens during a House Call?
We spend two hours in your home working through your decorating questions. We might focus on one room or look at decisions across the house, depending on your priorities and what we can reasonably cover together.
We can discuss furniture placement and look at colors or materials in the room itself. We may also browse specific products where that helps us make progress. Afterwards, I’ll send detailed notes, including any links we discussed.
Will we be able to sort out my whole house in two hours?
We can certainly look at the bigger picture and identify where to begin. Developing a design for every room takes more time, though.
If you have a long list, we’ll start with what matters most to you. A House Call can give you direction across several spaces, but it won’t produce the researched selections or room boards included in a longer project.
Will you find furniture for me after the meeting?
The design work for a House Call happens during our booked session. Your follow-up notes record what we discussed; they don’t include a separate round of research or sourcing afterwards.
If you’d like me to go away and find options for you, On Call or Full House will give us the time to do that properly.
Do you bring samples, and can I keep them?
I bring paint and wallpaper samples where relevant to our conversation. These are part of my working collection, so they come home with me. I’ll record specific recommendations in your notes so you know which samples to get for your own testing.
Do you offer virtual House Calls?
Yes. A Virtual House Call is a one-hour consultation, particularly useful for focused questions or if you live outside my local area. We can discuss a room that feels stuck or look at choices you’re already considering.
Joining from your phone makes it easier to walk me around the space. You’ll receive written notes afterwards, just as you would following an in-person visit.
-
Where do you work?
I’m based in South Orange, New Jersey. In-person House Calls are available within about 20 minutes of South Orange, including Maplewood and nearby towns.
For an On Call or Full House project, get in touch with your location and a little about what you have in mind. If you’re further away, a Virtual House Call may be a good place to start.
How much does it cost?
A two-hour in-person House Call is $675. A one-hour Virtual House Call is $350.
On Call starts at $2,000, and Full House starts at $12,000. Both are priced around the agreed scope, with a proposal for your particular project.
Do I have to book a House Call before On Call or Full House?
You can enquire about On Call or Full House directly. If you’re unsure which service fits, start with a free 15-minute call and we can talk it through.
Can you help with exterior paint colors?
Yes. I also offer exterior paint consultations. Choosing colors for the outside of a house brings its own questions, so I have separate options for that work. You can find them through the exterior painting link on my services page.

What kind of murals do you paint?
My murals follow my geometric house style, with a palette chosen for your space. I work in homes and commercial settings. Have a look through the mural portfolio to see whether the style feels right for what you have in mind.
I don’t take on every kind of mural illustration, so if you’re looking for something quite different from the work shown, another mural artist may be a better fit.
Will I see the mural design before you paint it?
We’ll agree the color palette together, but the composition develops on site. That lets me respond to the shape of the wall and the way you see it as you move through the space.
There isn’t a finished mural drawing to approve beforehand. The portfolio gives you a sense of the style and approach you’re commissioning.
How do mural pricing and installation work?
I’ll put together a proposal based on your space and the scope of the work. The mural fee covers the design and painting, including the paint and materials I use.
You’ll need to arrange wall preparation and clear the working area before I arrive. We’ll discuss what’s needed and the installation timing for your project before booking.
